The WellSpan Orthopedic Hand Surgery Fellowship offers a one-year program with comprehensive education in surgery of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.
Recognized by the Accredited Council for Graduate Medical Education, our program accepts one fellow per year.
Exceptional teaching staff
Five staff attendings include two microvascular hand surgeons, two plastic surgeons and a fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow surgeon. Together, these accomplished surgeons provide complete fellow education and experience.
Rotations
As a fellow, you’ll have four rotations of three months each to allow maximal exposure to all staff attendings. Inpatient care, outpatient clinical care, surgical care of the patients and on-call responsibilities are all integrated into the fellowship.
Opportunities for rotations at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland will enhance your trauma and microvascular experience. You’ll develop a unique understanding in the care of the traumatized upper extremity and microvascular flap coverage of traumatic soft tissue injuries.
Research
During the fellowship year, you’ll prepare a research project with the help and guidance of one or more of the attending staff. You must submit the research project to a peer-reviewed journal as part of the curriculum.
Facilities
As a Level I Trauma Center, WellSpan York Hospital is the flagship teaching facility for trauma cases in the upper extremity. Two other facilities, a dedicated orthopedic/neurosurgical hospital and an outpatient surgical center, offer the entire spectrum of upper extremity care.
Applications
The WellSpan Orthopedic Hand Surgery Fellowship Program became part of the National Resident Matching Program match in 2015. Applicants from orthopedic, plastic surgery and general surgery residencies will all be considered.
